Cesium iodide (chemical formula :CsI) is an inorganic ionic compound commonly used as an input fluorescent agent in fluorescent display devices such as X-ray image multiplication tubes. Cesium iodide cathode tubes have high detection efficiency for strong ultraviolet wavelengths. Cesium iodide crystals are often used as scintillator materials for electromagnetic calorimeters in particle physics experiments. Pure cesium iodide is a fast, high-density scintillator material with a relatively high amount of luminescence. The light emitted has two main components: wavelengths in the near-ultraviolet region of 310 nm and 460 nm. The disadvantage of cesium iodide is that the high temperature affects the gradient and the slight hygroscopicity. Cesium iodide can be used as a spectroscope in Fourier transform spectroscopy (FT-IR) spectrometers. Cesium iodide has a wider transmission range than the more commonly used potassium bromide spectroscope, and the use of the band can be extended to the far infrared. But there is a problem, optical cesium iodide crystals are very soft, no cleavage, so it is difficult to make a flat polished surface. In addition, cesium iodide optical crystals must be stored in dry containers to prevent water from reacting with cesium iodide. Plating a layer of germanium on the surface of cesium iodide can minimize the influence of contact with air moisture during the exchange of the spectrometer.

Widely used as scintillation medium for high energy particles and ionizing radiation detectors. Vacuum-deposited CSI (Tl) films were first used for X-ray imaging in photoelectric converters. CSI (TL) scintillator films are widely used in X-ray imaging due to their high scintillation efficiency to X-ray radiation, high spatial resolution and good matching to the spectral sensitive silicon based readout array in advanced digital X-ray images.
