Zinc iodide (chemical formula: ZnI2) is the iodide of zinc bivalent.

The appearance of zinc iodide is white or nearly white granular powder, which gradually turns brown in the air due to the release of iodine and has deliquation. The melting point is 446ºC, the boiling point is about 624ºC(and decomposition), and the relative density is 4.736(25ºC). Soluble in water, ethanol, ether,  ammonium carbonate solutions. Its aqueous solution is acidic to litmus, with a pH of about 5. Keep away from moisture and in an airtight container away from light. A reagent for the analysis of nitrite, free and other oxidizing agents, used in photography and medicine as a preservative and local astringent.

Usage

1. Used as local antiseptic disinfectant and astringent in medical treatment; Used in iodine starch reagent to determine nitrite; Used as a reagent for free and other oxidants.

2. Zinc iodide can effectively prepare organic zinc reagents through the transfer metallization reaction, and as a mild Lewis acid, it can also promote the addition reaction and substitution reaction. Zinc iodide can undergo transfer metallization with organometallic reagents such as organo-lithium, organo-magnesium and organo-copper to obtain organo-zinc reagents.
