Glyoxylic acid is composed of an aldehyde group (-CHO) and a carboxylic group (-COOH). Its structural formula is HOCCOOH and its molecular formula is C2H2O3.

Glycolic acid, CH20HCOOH, also known as hydroxyacetic acid, is composed of colorless deliquescent leaflets that decompose at approximately 78° C (172 OF). It is soluble in water,alcohol,and ether.Glycolic acid is used in dyeing, tanning, electropolishing,and in foodstuffs. It is produced by oxidizing glycol with dilute nitric ac-id.

Glyoxylic acid is the simplest keto acid (aldehyde acid), which has the properties of both acid and aldehyde. It is used as an intermediate of varnish raw materials, spices, medicines, dyes, plastics and household chemicals.

Application

Glyoxalic acid can be used in the synthesis of a variety of reactions.

Glyoxylic acid is used in Hopkins Cole reaction, which is used in the detection of tryptophan in proteins.

It reacts with phen0l to get 4-hydroxymandelic acid, which on further reaction with amm0nia gives hydroxyphenylglycine, as a precursor to the drug amoxicilln.

It is also used as a starting material for the preparation of 4-hydroxyphenylacetic acid, which is used to get atenolo.

Glyoxylic acid is an important raw material of fine chemicals, which is widely used in medicine (mainly used in broad spectrum antibiotic, antihypertensive drug, cosmetic additive allantoin, high value added aromatic aldehyde, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, etc.), water stabilizer, perfume (ethyl vanillin), pesticide intermediates, etc.
