Mannitol is a type of sugar alcohol which is also used as a medication. As a sugar, it is often used as a sweetener in diabetic food, as it is poorly absorbed from the intestines. As a medication, it is used to decrease pressure in the eyes, as in glaucoma, and to lower increased intracranial pressure. Medically, it is given by injection. Effects typically begin within 15 minutes and last up to 8 hours.

Application

Mannitol is of stable properties. With its own unique physiological properties, mannitol is widely used food and other industrial fields.

In food industries - The absorbency of mannitol in sugar and sugar alcohols is in minimum level. It is of refreshing sweet taste and used in the anti-adherence of food such as malt sugar, gum and rice cake etc, as well as used as adhesion-proof powders of general cake. It can also be used as low calorific value and low sugar content sweeteners like food and body-building food for diabetes patients. 
In other industries -- Mannitol can be used in plastics industry to produce rosin ester, synthetic glycerol resin, explosives and detonators ( nitromannite ) etc. It can also be applied to determinate boron in chemical analysis and as bacterial culture agent in biological test, etc.  

Function

Mannitol, C6H14O6, is a sugar alcohol that is an isomer of sorbitol. It is soluble in water and is a white crystalline powder with a sweet taste similar to sucrose.The sweetness is about 57%~72% of sucrose.

Mannitol is a 6-carbon sugar alcohol, which can be made from fructose through catalytic hydrogenation.  It has low hygroscopicity, and is often used as a dusting agent in gum candy manufacturing to avoid bonding with manufacturing equipment and packaging machinery.

It is also used as a plasticizing system component to maintain its soft properties.

It can also be used as a thinner or filler for sugar tablets and as a chocolate-flavored coating for ice cream and candy.     Has a pleasant flavor, does not fade at high temperature, chemical properties are not lively.

Its pleasant flavor and texture mask vitamin, mineral and herb scents.

It is a good low calorie sweetener, gumdrop and candy anti-stick agent, nutritional supplement and tissue modifier, moisturizing agent.
