It is often used for the coupling of amino acids for peptide synthesis and as a reagent in organic synthesis.N,N '-carbonyl diimidazole (CDI) is a derivative of imidazole that has a closed large P bond in its imidazole structure and a lone pair of electrons in the unbonded sp2 orbital of one of the nitrogen atoms. These determine that CDI has a strong chemical chemical reaction activity, alcohol, acid and other functional groups to synthesize many compounds that are difficult to get by general chemical methods.
