1, 3-butanediol is a colorless viscous liquid with a slightly bitter sweetness and strong hygroscopicity. Soluble in water, dibutyl phthalate, almost insoluble in benzene, ethanolamines, aliphatic hydrocarbons, mineral oil and linseed oil. The boiling point is high, so it is easy to be oxidized by air during atmospheric distillation, and should be distilled under reduced pressure.
