4-Methyl-5-thiazoleethanol is used in the synthesis of novel HldE kinase inhibitors used against gram negative bacteria. Also used in the synthesis of potential antimalarial agents from bis-thiazolium analogues.

4-methyl-5 -(beta-hydroxyethyl) thiazole can be obtained by the reduction reaction of 4-methyl-5-ethyl acetate with lithium aluminum tetrahydride. Or to α-chloroacetylpropanol and thioformamide condensation cyclization, and then action, to obtain the desired product.
