Not to be confused with histamine (C5H9N3). Histidine (C6H9N3O2), abbreviated His or H, is an alpha amino acid binding imidazole functional group. It is one of the 23 most common amino acids found in proteins. Originally thought to be essential only for infants, longer-term studies have shown that it is also an essential amino acid for adults. The isoelectric point is 7.59, which is an alkaline amino acid and carries a positive charge under physiological conditions. His synthetic codons are CAU and CAC. Histidine was first isolated in 1896 by the German physician Albrecht Kossel.
