Hydroxyethylmethacrylate or HEMA is the monomer that is used to make the polymer polyhydroxyethylmethacrylate. The polymer is hydrophobic; however, when the polymer is subjected to water it will swell due to the molecule's hydrophilic pendant group. Depending on the physical and chemical structure of the polymer, it is capable of absorbing from 10 to 600% water relative to the dry weight. Because of this property, it was one of the first materials to be successfully used in the manufacture of flexible contact lenses.

Application
1. Mainly used for modification of resin and coating. Acrylic resin containing active hydroxyl group in side chain can be prepared by copolymerization with other acrylic monomers, which can be esterified and crosslinked to synthesize insoluble resin and improve adhesion, and can be used as fiber treatment agent. React with melamine-formaldehyde (or urea-formaldehyde) resin, epoxy resin, etc., for the manufacture of two-component coatings. Add to the high-end car paint, can maintain the mirror luster for a long time. It can also be used as an adhesive for synthetic textiles and a medical polymer monomer.
2. Used as a crosslinked monomer for manufacturing solvent-based or emulsion acrylate adhesives. It is a soft resin with excellent gloss, transparency and weather resistance, which can be used as a contact lens material because of its cohesive ethylene bond and active hydroxyl group. It is also used in the production of photosensitive resins, medical polymer materials and thermosetting coatings. The reaction with melamine formaldehyde resin and epoxy resin can produce two-component coatings for high-end cars. It can also be used as a modifier of resin for fiber and non-woven fabric processing and paper processing.
